Did you know that physical reflexes get 10 times slower and emotional reactions amplify by 10 times when a person is REM deprived (rapid eye movement sleep, the deep sleep or brain sleep)? Deep sleep (REM) is associated with dreaming, a critical part of our sleep. Even if individuals might get 3-5 hours of non-REM sleep (body-sleep reached in stages 1 and 2), if they haven't slept long enough to reach the longer REM deep sleep periods that take part in the third part of the night (stage 3 and 4), the brain-sleep with slow Delta waves is not reached causing a disruption in the neuro-cells biochemistry. Immune function and memory are impaired, observed in the lack of the recollection of day-time learning. If poor quality sleep continues, symptoms listed below start to surface.
REM sleep disorder is only one of the many sleep conditions. Insomnia, Hypersomnia and Obstructive Sleep Apnea are all conditions that can be managed and even cured with adequate attention and care.
